Programming is a smart career move – it’s a steady, solid career path with tons of room to grow and a significant amount of job security, as most companies rely on tech talent to some degree. As an entry-level programmer, however, you might already be wondering what to focus on to improve your career outlook and secure better positions for yourself down the line.

While you’re learning the ropes at your new job, here’s what else to focus on during the early stages of your career to help position yourself well for future work.

Upskilling for Entry-Level Programmers

What do you need besides a solid educational background and some work experience under your belt to help you succeed in your programming career? Focus your efforts here to get ahead:

  • Grow your network and Linux skills and get certified when possible: As a programmer in the early stages of your career, you don’t need to specialize to be effective and employable. Additional training in areas that you’re not super comfortable in yet can be beneficial in building your confidence to advance your career. Spend some time studying operating systems, networking basics, and keeping up to date with industry trends. You don’t need to become an expert overnight, but remembering to challenge yourself is an important habit to get into early in your career. After some time, your employer may even help you pay for certifications like LPIC- 1, Linux+, RHCSA, and more.
  • In-person networking: There’s the networking knowledge that’s crucial to technology jobs, and then there’s the ability to network as a professional. People from every industry and job experience level struggle with networking, so making this a priority early in your career can be a huge benefit. Learning how to talk about yourself, your career goals, and articulately answer and ask questions are skills that can significantly increase your ability to get noticed and hired. It’s also advantageous to find your people; developing personal and professional connections with likeminded people with similar goals and interests can help you grow as an individual and an employee. Start by joining online forums and groups for other programming professionals and grow your person to person connection skills over time.

Are you looking to get your foot in the door with top IT companies?

From specific technical training to better soft skills, slowing adding new skills and competencies is a sure way to help professionally position you for promotion or advancement. If you’re looking for your next programming role, get in touch with Open Systems Inc, today.

Finding a job after college can be stressful – not only do you want to start using your degree, you might have student loans to begin paying back or other financial obligations that make finding a job an urgent concern. Plus, it seems like every job posting always has some previous job history or experience requirement. This can seem like an impossible task sometimes because most of your attention over the last few years of your life was on obtaining your degree so you could get a job and not on work itself.

Here are a few ways to make it easier to find a job post-graduation:

  1. Prepare before graduation: Of course, the way to give yourself the best chance at post-college job success is to start planning and networking before graduation day. Sometimes this means making connections at an on-campus job fair, and other times it involves sending out resumes and emails to recruitment firms that specialize in your field or future industry. It might also mean asking peers and past classmates for their job plans and asking for referrals to help get your foot in the door.
  2. Make your experience matter: You might not have job experience, but chances are you have skills and qualifications that matter. Instead of posing your job search as a way for you to grow skills and experiences, make it about what you can offer your potential new employer. Find the links between your educational and extracurricular achievements and what the job requirements are. For instance, if you’re looking for a sales position and were also on the debate team or part of an honors business class, play that up in your conversations with recruiters.
  3. Know your resume is still a valuable tool: Not having job experience isn’t an excuse for having a subpar resume. Meet with your school’s job placement or alumni team to help you get your resume in the best shape possible so that you can use it to get the attention of more recruiters.
  4. Consider an internship: Internships are a great way to get exposure and also experience. If you’ve completed an internship with a company previously, reach out to their HR team to ask if they’re looking for any permanent help. If you haven’t done an internship yet, it might not be too late. Considering asking an organization you’d be interested in joining if they’d let you do an internship or trial period before hiring you fulltime. This can give both you and the company a sense of if it’s a good fit and also show your work ethic and desire to learn.

Get your foot in the door

As a candidate, there are likely many things you bring to the table, and the best employers know that candidates are more than just a resume. But having the right skills and experience on your resume can help you get noticed and start the process of engaging with an organization. If you want to make an impression and stand out as an applicant, here are the top skills you should focus on growing as a developer.

  1. Cloud infrastructure management: Cloud technology is by no means new, but it is changing. Many businesses say that while they’ve implemented cloud or hybrid systems, their team knowledge is below what it needs to be to get the most out of the technology. The best IT and engineering candidates are staying on top of the trends in this field and gaining hands-on experience.
  2. Side reliability engineering: Apps and websites need to be reliable to gain customer trust and ensure engagement. Site reliability engineers can improve the performance of company web assets; developing a focus on operations and performance in addition to coding skills can show employers your usefulness and versatility.
  3. Artificial intelligence: AI is likely to be involved in not only developing cutting edge systems for businesses to deploy but is also one of the pieces of a tech stack that helps drive companies forward, remain competitive, and stay innovative over time.  AI may be popular for its ability to reduce manual input and use data and analytics more effectively. However, it will still require capable staff to help oversee operations and supervise systems. Growing your knowledge of data science and machine learning can be helpful in finding, securing, and succeeding in a job.

In addition to these skills helping you stand out as a top candidate, they will likely make the day to day operations of your job much easier and help you get noticed internally by supervisors as competent, capable, and promotion worthy.
