Avionics techs can enjoy a stable, lucrative career and fulfilling professional growth for exciting companies across the country. Here’s what to know.

What are avionics technicians?

Avionics techs are specialized tech professionals who install, inspect, test, adjust, or repair avionics equipment, including radar, radio, navigation, and missile control systems in aircraft such as commercial or private airplanes, helicopters, or space vehicles.

Avionics Technicians perform repairs, upgrades, and modifications to aircraft avionics equipment to ensure that companies and aircraft have components they need to stay in flight. Without these critical components, aircraft would not be able to perform the missions they are designed to deliver.

What industries do avionics technicians work in?

Avionics technicians can be found anywhere there’s aircraft. That includes:

  • Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing
  • Nonscheduled and Schedule Air Transportation
  • Navigational, Measuring, Electromedical, and Control Instruments Manufacturing
  • Scientific Research and Development Services
  • Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing
  •  Management, Scientific, and Technical Consulting Services
  • National Military Services

Where do avionics technicians work?

Avionics technicians, including aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics, usually work in hangars, in repair stations, or on airfields. Some work in manufacturing plants or research labs.

How does someone become an avionics technician?

Most aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians learn job skills and industry knowledge at a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-approved aviation maintenance technician school, while some learn on the job. Many receive training in the military before moving to the private sector.

What’s the average salary for avionics technicians?

While salaries will vary based on education, experience, and geographical location, the range for most avionics technicians is from about $30,000 to over $90,000, with the average salary being about $31 an hour or just over $65,000 annually. The states that report the highest salaries for avionics techs include Maryland, New Jersey, Alaska, California, and Massachusetts.

What is the career outlook for this field?

Job growth in this field is predicted to rise by 3% through 2028.

Take your career to new heights! If a career in avionics tech is interesting to you or you want to find your next role in the field, we can help. Get in touch with our team today to find out what companies are hiring and how we can help you find the right role.

Electrical engineering has long been a critical role in tech and engineering companies. The upcoming new year and new decade promise continued importance of electrical engineering positions. What are the most prominent electrical engineering roles and developing career trends?

Job opportunities

  • Biomedical engineers: Electrical engineers are crucial to the future of tech-driven medicine. Those who work in these roles design and create the key tech tools used in healthcare, including devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare.
  • Computer hardware engineers: Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop and test the computer systems and elements that are mission-critical to the success of technology and the businesses that technology supports. Engineers in these roles create, develop, and design processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, routers, and more.
  • Electrical and electronics engineering technicians: Electrical and electronics engineering technicians are what is usually brought to mind when talking about electrical engineering roles. They help engineers design and develop computers and communications equipment used by almost all businesses. They can also work on more niche equipment such as medical monitoring and navigational equipment. Many times their roles involve product evaluation and testing and running measuring and diagnostic services to adjust, test, and repair equipment. Increasingly, they are used to manufacture and deployment of equipment for automation, both physical and digital.
  • Electrical and electronics installation and repair: In addition to the design and creation of electronics, there is a need for installation and repair of these products. Electrical and electronics installers and repairers work on a variety of electrical equipment for telecommunications, transportation, utilities, and other industries.
  • Electromechanical technicians: Electromechanical technicians are crucial to the future of robotics. They help design, operate, test, and maintain electromechanical equipment such as unmanned, automated, and robotic devices.

Industries and sectors

Because power and technology are essential to the everyday lives of individuals and the success of businesses, there are plenty of electrical engineering roles and career paths across business types.

Electrical engineers work for many companies across industries, including:

  • Engineering services
  • Electric power generation and transmission
  • Navigational, measuring, electromedical, and control instruments manufacturing
  • Research and development
  • Electronic component manufacturing  Federal government roles

Hiring can be expensive, time-consuming, and difficult. That’s why you need to take steps to shorten your hiring cycle and foster the kind of environment that’s not only desirable by new hires but also supportive of long-time team members. If you want to reduce hiring costs and turn down turnover, focus on these areas.

  1. To get the best talent, be the best company: Being the “best” is certainly subjective, but you want to attract candidates who want what you want. The best way to show that and be seen as an ideal match for top talent is to create a strong vision and culture that supports the implementation of that vision.
  1. Give room to grow: Want to keep the best talent around? Give them a chance to shine. Make sure they’re getting the right training that not only helps support them in their current role and also continuing education and continually challenging projects that help stretch and grow your team.
  1. Give them what they need to succeed: This is going to look different for every employee, but it’s a good idea to have a foundation of tools that will ultimately make your employees happy to come to work and be productive while they’re there. These tools might be cutting edge software or standing desks – ask your team what they need and be prepared to start looking for ways to solve for their requests.

Investing in your team is no longer a “nice to have” for employees. Employees are expecting more from businesses because they know the demands on employees to achieve and remain competitive is very real. The best candidates want a company they can believe in and who believes in them. That’s why focusing on ways to make your business and culture better is one of the best ways to attract and retain talent.

Do you need help recruiting your next team member?
